Celebrating the Best in Baking
The results are in and once again, Miami Bakehouse has proven why it’s team is one of WA’s best.
At the 2025 Perth Royal Food Awards, Miami Bakehouse proudly took home multiple awards, adding to their growing collection of over 1,100 national and state awards. The competition showcases the best of Western Australia’s food producers, and they’re thrilled to be recognised alongside so many outstanding local talents.
During competition day, expert judges thoroughly assessed bread and pastry entries on key criteria such as appearance, aroma, texture, taste and overall skills of the bakers.
What the Judges look for?

Each Category has slightly different criteria at the Perth Royal Food Awards
Commercial Bread Classes
Judges will pick up the bread loaf, review its appearance right around the outside of the loaf. They are considering how well the baker has moulded the dough to get the finished baked
appearance. If it has special cuts or markings, they will look at these for balance and skill in working with the bread dough.
They consider the smell or aroma of the bread. Then they will cut the loaf and examine the texture of the inside of the loaf as part of their assessment of the baker’s skill.
Then of course, there’s the tasting to see what the bread not only tastes like but also its texture when sampling.
Artisan Bread Classes

The judging here is very similar to the Commercial Bread approach. This also includes special consideration for the type of loaf, it may be a sourdough which has a certain flavour and aroma. It could be a Turkish bread style or Ciabatta and all of these types of bread require different skills in preparation and baking.
Pastry
The Pastry category includes all things cake and savoury pies and products that are made using puff or shortcrust pastry.
Pie and Sausage Roll judges will check the shape and colour is even, while making sure the size is a single lunch serving. Then they consider the filling, such as, the meat quality, flavour, colour and texture. The pastry is then assessed for a visible flake in puff pastry. The judges also consider if the pastry has the perfect golden colour and sample the pie for eating quality. Gourmet categories are also assessed on creativity for appearance and filling.
